Sports Vision Assessments

Sports Vision Training has little to do with improving the clarity of an athlete’s vision (visual acuity) and everything to do with improving their visual performance (specific visual skills used during competition).

Everything we teach is designed to increase self-awareness, enhance confidence and improve every aspect of your game.

After all, your brain is the control center of your body. When you train your brain to work and communicate more effectively, your body works better too!

Sports Vision, the neurocognitive science of helping athletes reach peak levels of performance through the enhancement of visual skills, is becoming more and more important in the training programs of many sports. Sports vision tests and training can help athletes determine how well their eyes perform, beyond a basic ability to see letters and objects clearly on a standard eye chart.

By discovering if any weaknesses lie in these areas, we can help an athlete enhance not only these visual skills, but also the resulting performance in their sport. Athletes that use their visual system to its maximum potential will gain optimal performance and a competitive edge.

Disclaimer: The Athlete EYE Q sports vision performance assessment does not replace a comprehensive eye examination. The Athlete EYE Q sports vision performance assessment is NOT a medical evaluation; therefore, it is NOT covered by insurance. For optimal results, an annual comprehensive eye health evaluation is strongly recommended prior to beginning a training program.

How Sports Vision Assessments Work

Who Should Have a Sports Vision Assessment?

A Sports Vision Assessment is recommended for competitive athletes of any ability level. We routinely see competitive youth athletes, collegiate athletes, semi-professional athletes and competitive adult athletes.

The assessment and action plan is tailored to the specific goals and visual demands of the athlete. For this reason, a Sports Vision Assessment will be of benefit regardless of the sport you play.

The assessment evaluates an athlete in 10 different Dynamic Visual Skills areas which includes the following –

Visual Clarity

The athlete’s ability to see things clearly while in motion and track moving objects

Contrast Sensitivity

The athlete's ability to see through distractions

Depth Perception

The athlete's ability to judge the distance of objects accurately

Near-Far Quickness

How quickly and accurately the athlete can shift focus

Perception Span

The athlete's ability to visually acquire critical information

Reaction Time

The time required by an athlete to mentally process visual information and take action

Multiple Object Tracking

The athlete's ability to track objects moving in space

Target Capture

The athlete's ability to rapidly shift and recognize peripheral targets

Hand-Eye Coordination

Determines how well the athlete coordinates control of their eye movement with their hand movement

Go-No-Go

The athlete's ability to make quick and react in pressure situations

Why Have a Sports Vision Assessment?

There are several reasons an athlete should have a Sports Vision Assessment.

Determine Your Athlete Vision Profile

A Sports Vision Assessment is an evaluation of visual functioning as it pertains to athletic performance. The various aspects of visual performance are evaluated against professional athletes in your sports to reveal your relative strengths and weaknesses. At the conclusion of the Vision Assessment, the results will be compiled and displayed in your Athlete Vision Profile. Understanding areas for improvement allows us to develop an action plan to maximize visual performance – which translates to improved performance in your sport.

Perform Concussion Baseline Testing

A concussion can happen at any time – athlete or not. Visual changes are extremely common in concussions, causing a number of symptoms. The testing performed during a Sports Vision Assessment can serve as a baseline for visual performance. This data can be used to assist in the diagnosis of a concussion or to quantify visual changes secondary to a known concussion. Managing the visual effects of a concussion improves your timeline for return-to-play as well as the return-to-learning for youth athletes.

Develop a Sports Vision Training Program

Your visual system can be trained to improve performance, and many competitive athletes use Sports Vision Training to gain a competitive edge. Your Sports Vision Profile is used to develop a personalized Sports Vision Training program. Our sports vision trainers will guide you through a one-on-one training program that improves the precision and speed of your visual system.

When Should an Athlete Have a Sports Vision Assessment?

Sports Vision Assessments, just like routine eye exams for non-athletes, should be performed once per year. An annual schedule allows baseline data to be updated as a youth athlete develops and allows changes to be made in sport-specific vision correction.

While a Sports Vision Assessment can be performed at any time during the year, many athletes find it helpful to have the evaluation performed prior to the start of their season. This allows information to be gathered before competition begins, which is useful to address any performance gaps. Additionally, visual performance can be maximized for the new season and a sports vision training program can be performed going into the season or during the beginning of the season – allowing the athlete to peak late in the season and during playoffs.

VISION IS A LEARNED SKILL…

Like any learned skill it can be improved on with practice. Split-second timing can make all the difference for any sports, therefore exceptional visual skills are a must.

Analyzing the Assessment Result

Once we are done assessing the athlete, we review the performance of every test with the athlete. Each of the 10 dynamic vision skills assessment results are plotted in a radar chart, your sport and position is compared to the current level you are at or the level you are striving to reach. Greater the number and the size of the plot, the better the performance. Each report provides strengths and opportunities to improve. Two evaluations can be overlapped to see areas of improvement between two points in time, such as a baseline assessment and six-month mark of an individualized training regimen.

How Do You Measure Up To The Pros?

The data analytics includes comparative datasets from youth to professional sports in a wide range of sports and positions. If you are a High School level players wanting to play D1, you can quickly see where you are in comparison, and what areas you need to work on. An invaluable tool for the serious athlete. This technology is exclusive to The Athletes Mental Trainer™ the only provider of Sports Vision Programs in the Tri-State area.
